Charlie and I fished the WCA crappiei tournament Saturday on Columbus Lake. We had a great time and fished with some really nice folks. We won the event with 7 crappie weighing 8.26 pounds. This was a really tough fishing day. The really heavy currents and muddy water gave a definite advantage to the home teams. We fished 9 to 11 feet deep early as that is where we had located some fish earlier in the week but caught nothing but very little crappie. We figured the crappie must have moved shallow to escape the muddy fresh water and indeed they had. We probably caught 30 crappie but most were really small. All of the crappie we weighed came from 3 to 5 foot of water. We caught them on the Crappie101.com "vitamin c" and "hooker" jigs with a bullfrog skirt and orange skirt. The big fish was a 1.75 pound female crappie that had laid out. Man she would have been a big one earlier in the spring.
We really enjoyed fishing with the WCA guys and look forward to Gainsville in June. This will be an open event so anybody interested in coming to fish this event let us know.
