We tagged and released nine black crappie today at Sardis Lake. The ice on the deck of the boat made it a little treacherous, but we got it done without anybody falling overboard. Water temperature was 37 degrees at the surface. All fish were caught using trap nets in about 7 feet of water.

Pomoxis is a genus of freshwater fish in the sunfish family (family Centrarchidae) of order Perciformes. The type species is P. annularis, the white crappiei. The common name crappie (pronounced /ˈkræpiː/), refers to either of the Pomoxis species, both of which are extremely popular game fish.
